On March 17, 1776, General George Washington secured the first victory in the American Revolution. By bringing 59 cannons up a South Boston hill and pointing them towards British troops, he began a 12-day standoff, ending with a retreat.
A monument, standing 115-feet-tall in Thomas Park, commemorates that moment, known as Evacuation Day, which also falls on St. Patrick’s Day.
