With July 4 around the corner, many Americans will celebrate the day they believe the United States gained independence. But is it really Independence Day?

According to Garrett Dash Nelson, president and head curator of the Norman B. Leventhal Map & Education Center at the Boston Public Library, the final version of the Declaration of Independence was not completed until the end of 1776, about five months after the nation became independent from England.
