Hot Dogs and Heroes: Art’s New Twist on History

Passersby stop to snap a photo of a Midnight Ride mural over Dewey Square in downtown Boston. Others view famous historical paintings in the Museum of Fine Art — but there’s something unusual about these artworks.

A heroic winged woman wearing a Lady Liberty-esque crown is standing alongside a blue horse in the 76-foot tall mural, called “The Midnight Ride.” The paintings, in the MFA cafeteria, show George Washington clutching a hot dog.
