37th Summer Workshop A Success For Aspiring Journalists

The New England High School Journalism Collaborative (NEHSJC) held its 37th summer workshop program in June at Simmons University in Boston and Regis College in Weston.

Aspiring journalists from high schools in four New England states attended the week-long program. Participating sponsors included The Boston Globe, the New England Newspaper and Press Association, Simmons, and Regis.

The program is made possible through the generosity of the late Carole C. Remick, who founded the program in 1987. During the week students worked alongside professional journalists to create their own newspaper and multimedia site. The Boston Globe printed copies of their newspaper called “Between The Lines.”

Leading the program was Leah Lamson, managing director and former editor of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, and Milton Valencia, deputy editor of The Boston Globe.

The students were sent out on assignments in Boston and worked under deadline to complete their work. Many Boston area journalists as well as members of the NEHSJC board volunteered their time to assist in the program.

The week ended with a banquet in College Hall at Regis. Parents and guests were invited to celebrate the accomplishments of the students. Three students received special recognition for their work in writing, multimedia, and overall excellence.
